News from Russ and Heidi Smith,
South American Missionary Society (SAMS) Missionaries serving in Chile
Dear Friends
and Family,
Weve been
back in Chile almost two months now. Heidi and the children are well established
in school. It is quite challenging though, more demanding for the children than
anything up to now. Heidi, too, has a lot of demands on her time, even though
she has only 9 students! Russ duties have begun also. Coming activities in the
next few weeks include:
- an ENEChildrens Encounter in
the Spirit, September 14-15, in which both Joshua and Joyanne are working,
- an EMEWomens Encounter in
the Spirit, September 29, in which Heidi is participating, as spiritual
guide for a small group of the women at the Encounter.
- A week-long evangelistic
campaign from September 30- October 7which everyone is supposed to be
involved with. It will include continuous prayer, door-to-door evangelism,
healing/evangelistic service, womens evangelistic tea, mens evangelistic
barbecue, street preaching, childrens outreach and end Sunday with a last
evangelistic service.
- EMAAnglican Marriage Encounter
growth group in our home, which will last for about the next 6 months,
every other week
- Courses Russ has been asked to
tutor: Vida Abundante (Abundant Life) on Thursdays, and SEAN 6 (the last of
a 6-book course which studies Jesus life and ministry) on Wednesdays.
- And opportunities to preach
and/or celebrate Holy Communion in churches in San Joaquin (La Ascencion),
Renca (La Resurreccion and Buenas Nuevas) and Villa Alemana (San Esteban),
besides San Lucas Evangelista Church here in La Florida.
Some other
things to thank God for or to pray for:
- Our paperwork is mailed in for
our residency situation to be regularized so we can get Chilean ID cards
again. (Without those there are a lot of things that we can not do, and
other things that not having the card causes a hassle.)
- We are planning to take care of
another missionary home (as were doing now). Thats nice because we still
wont have to pay rent, and it gives us more time to have our ID cards so
that we will be able to sign contracts. Before that we will move back into
an apartment at the schoolan apartment which opens up just before we need
to move out from the house where we are and which is not needed until a few
days after we can move into the new house! God definitely works the timing
of things out.
- Russ attended a leaders retreat
on August 15 where three students from the CEP (Pastoral Studies Center, the
diocesan seminary) taught from Ephesians. He was so impressed. They are
excellent expositors of Gods Word. They believe it. They live it. The
Anglican Church of Chile has a great future with young men and women like
these being prepared so well. Praise the Lord!
- In spite of all the good things,
life in Santiago is stressfulespecially the traffic. If culture shock is
hitting as we adjust to life-in-Santiago, that is what is hitting hardest,
specifically Russ since he is the only one driving right now.
