Regional Confirmation Standing room only.

On April 6th, Bishop Dan presided over his first regional confirmation in the Southern Mission District at All Saints, Las Vegas.  Thirty-seven candidates were presented for confirmation and reception from three parishes.  St. Christophers, Boulder City presented ten candidates for confirmation and one for reception; St. Matthews, Las Vegas presented one candidate for Confirmation; All Saints traditional congregation presented three for Confirmation and one for Reception; and All Saints Iglesia de Todos los Santos presented twenty-one candidates for Confirmation.

Iglesia de Todos los Santos is a new Hispanic ministry at All Saints, led by Bernardo and Dolores Iniesta Avila.  The first Spanish language service was held last November and this class of twenty-one is their first confirmation class.  Bishop Dan used the sentence for confirmation from the Spanish Book of Common prayer for the Hispanic candidates.  The Gospel was read in English and Spanish, parts of the Eucharistic prayer were said in Spanish and Tagalog, and the Invitation to Communion was given in English, Spanish, and Tagalog.

The most moving part of the service for me was a young Hispanic man who is autistic.  When his family began to worship with Todos los Santos, this he had never received Holy Communion, having been denied the Sacrament in their previous church because he was unable to understand it.  He received his First Communion in January.  When Bishop Dan laid hands on him to confirm him, he cried out in delight, as if The Holy Spirit had truly touched him.  It reminded me of Pentecost as I imagined the disciples crying out in delight when the Holy Spirit grabbed them, and I thought to myself maybe this young man understands this better than all the rest of us.

Another particularly moving part of the service was the grandfather presented for confirmation by his young two granddaughters.  One adult who had been baptized in January was confirmed and his wife was received.  Several siblings were confirmed together.

It was a day of miracles, filled with the joy of the noise of children and a church filled with parishioners, family, and friends of the candidates.   All Saints choir, led by The Rev. Bede Parry on organ, and supported by trumpet, and flute led the hymns and liturgical music, and Mr. Mark Towne was the Cantor.

Bernardo Iniesta Avila and The Rev. Arsolin Almodiel assisted Bishop Dan at the altar.  Deacons were The Revs Karl Gustafson, Sandra Oetjen, and Emma Jean Gregory.   Ms. Roseline Thoms, from St. Lukes & Ms. Martha Watson, from All Saints, were Lectors.   Miss Tanya Martinez, and Miss Darlene Martinez, served as Acolytes; and  Mr. Jack Oetjen, Mr. Bill Ewing, Ushered.   Mrs. Nancy LaCombe and Mrs. Cinda Towne, were the Altar Guild team.

All Saints St. Margarets guild hosted a reception following the service, serving two cakes with Congratulations written on them, one in English and one in Spanish.
