Southern Mission District Meeting

August 9, 2008 � All Saints�, LV

 

Twenty people representing five mission district congregations (All Saints�, Grace in the Desert, Christ Church, St. Matthew�s, St. Luke�s) attended the meeting.

 

Fr. Ed Lovelady opened the meeting with a short reflection on Matthew 28.18-19 (The �Great Commission); with the question, What does this passage say to 21st Century disciples (us)?

 

  1.  Reminders about Diocesan Convention � Oct 24 � 26, Elko, NV

            Registration: �Early bird� registration ends on Aug 22nd

               

Charter Bus:  Reservation due now � money due Sep 15th

The cost is $100 per person for round-trip transportation.  The pick-up point is Arizona Charlie�s Casino on Decatur.  The bus will depart Arizona Charlie�s parking lot at 6:45 am on Thursday, Oct 23.  Parking is a secure lot is available at the lot on Evergreen Street.

Candidates for diocesan positions: Diocesan Council; Standing Committee; Commission on Ministry; Diocesan Review Committee; Ecclesiastical Court; Diocesan Council (Youth); Galilee Episcopal Camp Board of Trustees:  We need representation from our mission district with both lay and ordained � nomination forms and information about the vacancies and the qualifications and responsibilities -  are on the diocesan web site.

 

  1. Holy Land Tour � Lent 2009 � Sponsored by Christ Church, led by Fr. Bob McNaul � Feb 17 -26, 2009.  Contact Fr. Bob or Christ Church for more information.

 

  1. Episcopal Singles � Group forming at All Saints� open to Episcopal adults.  Yvonne Saunders, organizer.  Meet for fellowship and a potluck every 4 to 6 weeks and twice a month to work at a homeless shelter.  [email protected].  Yvonne was at the meeting and talked briefly about the formation of the group and announced the next meeting for August 24th at 5:00 pm at her home � contact her for more information.

 

  1. Youth � Don�t be surprised if you see a group of young people show up for church.  Some of our mission district youth are planning to get together and visit the parishes in our area.  If you have youth who are interested in being part of this � contact Matthew Pokorny � [email protected]

 

  1. Multi Cultural ministries � Fr. Ed Lovelady attended the Episcopal Asiamerican Ministries Consultation in Taiwan in June, along with Melissa Sese from our Holy Child ministries and the Episcopal Hispanic Ministries Conference in Atlanta in July, along with Bernardo and Dolores Iniesta, our Hispanic Ministers.

 

Fr. Ed Lovelady related that their experience at All Saints� with multi cultural ministries and participation in these conferences convinces him that multi cultural ministries is the future of our Episcopal Church � a wonderful opportunity for growth in numbers and ministry and celebrate the diversity of God�s creation in our different cultures together for worship and ministry.

 

  1. �Does it Fit� conference � At the University of the South, Sewanee, TN, June 1 � 3.  This is a conference for young adults focusing on issues around Christian vocation and ministry, lay and ordained.  If you�d like more information, contact Fr. Ed Lovelady or Melissa Sese - [email protected].  She is on the design committee for this event.  If you have young adults in your congregation who might be interested, direct them to Melissa.  

 

  1. A farewell � To Fr. Paul Colbert, leaving our diocese for work in the (Episcopal) diocese of San Joaquin in September.  We offered a prayer for Paul�s leaving.

 

  1. Report from Standing Committee.  Bill Leonard gave a short report of the work of the Standing committee.  He reported that the committee is working with

  2.  Epiphany in Henderson to expand their worship space and with Grace in the Desert their new parish center building.

 

  1. Fr. Paul Colbert reported on the work of the Diocesan Council, announcing that there were both lay and clergy vacancies for council positions. 

 

  1.   Fr. Mike Link, diocesan deployment officer reported via email that rectors have been called for St. Paul�s, Sparks (Fr. Kirk Woodliff), and Trinity, Reno (The Rev. Sefani Schatz). 

 

  1.   Reports from congregations

 

Grace in the Desert reported that they are moving ahead with plans for their new parish center building.  Clergy changes: Fr. Kevin Fisher has received a call to a parish and is leaving.  The Revs Margarite Cole and Marv Bredlau have joined the staff at Grace in the Desert.

 

St. Matthews announced their monthly yard sale on the 2nd Saturday of each month from 8 am to 1 pm.  They also have three aspirants for ordination as Deacon beginning the ordination process.

 

St. Luke�s announced their new Youth Sunday on the 4th Sunday of each month, with Morning Prayer led by the parish youth. Events coming up in our area:

 

All Saints�:  This weekend All Saints� will have a guest preacher from �Food for the Poor� Brochures are available with more information about this ministry and I encourage you to invite a guest preacher to come to your parish to talk about the ministry of this organization.

 

�Safe Church� training at All Saints� on Saturday, Aug 16th, beginning at 1:00 pm.  Using the �Safeguarding God�s Children� program and All Saints� parish Child Sexual abuse prevention policies.

 

Contemporary Worship at All Saints� on Aug 17th at the 10:30 service, using tri-lingual liturgy and music in a contemporary setting with guitar, piano, drums, and tambourine.

 

On Oct 11th, All Saints� will combine their usual �Oktoberfest� celebration with the other cultures represented in the parish and have a �Multi Cultural Fall Festival.  You are welcome to join us for this celebration � more information will be coming out as the planning proceeds.

 

Bernardo Iniesta, All Saints� Hispanic Missioner will be received by Bishop Dan as an Episcopal Priest on December 7th at All Saints� at the 10:30 service.  You are invited to share this celebration with us.

 

Fr. Ed Lovelady offered a reminder that if congregations have events they would like to publicize to the mission district to send him an email and attach any flyers or brochures to be posted on the mission district web site.

 

  1.  The next regular mission district meeting will be on Nov 1st a 10:00 am at St. Matthews.   Don�t forget the special Youth Ministry Meeting on Sep 13th at 10:00 am at All Saints�!
